Cognizant of the problem, the Coalition of the Willing (CoW) for data sharing and access was created in 2018 with joint support and coordination of the Alliance Bioversity-CIAT and GIZ (https://www.ethioagridata.com/index.html). Mobilizing its members, the CoW has embarked on data rescue operations including data ecosystem mapping, collation, and curation of the legacy data, which was put into the central data repository for its members and the wider data user\u2019s community according to the guideline developed based on the FAIR data principles and approved by the CoW. So far, CoW managed to collate and rescue about 20,000 legacy soil profile data and over 38,000 crop responses to fertilizer data (Tamene et al.,2022). The legacy soil profile dataset (consisting of Profiles Site = 1,776 observations with 37 variables; Profiles Layer Field = 1,493 observations with 64 variables; Profiles Layer Lab= 1,386 observations with 76 variables) is extracted, transformed, and uploaded into a harmonized template from the below source: Bilateral Ethiopian-Netherlands Effort for Food, Income and Trade (BENEFIT) Partnership which is a portfolio of five programs (ISSD, Cascape, ENTAG, SBN, and REALISE) and is funded by the government of the Kingdom of Netherlands through its embassy in Addis Ababa. The BENEFIT-REALISE program implements its interventions in 60 PSNP weredas in four regions (Tigray, Amhara, Oromia, and SNNPR).Accordingly, in 2019, BENEFIT-REALISE along with the MoA initiated a wereda-wide soil resource characterization and mapping task at1:50,000 scale in 15 BENEFIT-REALISE intervention weredas: 3 of Tigray, 6 of Amhara, 3 of Oromia, and 3 of SNNPR. The AfSIS Phase I project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) from 2009-2013, aimed to provide a consistent baseline of soil information across sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Led by CIAT-TSBF, partners included: ISRIC, CIESIN, The Earth Institute at Columbia University and World Agroforestry (ICRAF). ICRAF led the systematic assessments of soil health using the Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF), which was developed at ICRAF, http://landscapeportal.org/blog/2015/03/25/the-land-degradation-surveillance-framework-ldsf/. LDSF sites were randomized using spatial stratification based on Koeppen-Geiger Climate zones across 19 countries in SSA. In total 60 LDSF sites were sampled. (BMGF), which aimed to provide a consistent baseline of soil information for monitoring soil ecosystem services in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Partners included, CIAT-TSBF, ISRIC, CIESIN, The Earth Institute at Columbia University and World Agroforestry (ICRAF). The Land Degradation Surveillance Framework (LDSF), developed at ICRAF, was employed to systematically sample key biopshyical indicators of land and soil health, across landscapes. LDSF sites were randomized using spatial stratification based on Koeppen-Geiger Climate zones across 19 countries in SSA. Soil samples were collected using the LDSF at two depths, 0-20 cm and 20-50 cm. Mid-infrared diffuse refectance spectroscopy (MIR) was a key soil characterization and screening tool in AfSIS. MIR measurements of the ~18,500 samples were centralized at ICRAF\u2019s Soil-Plant Spectral Diagnostics Laboratory based in Nairobi Kenya using the Bruker Tensor 27/HTs -XT_FT-IR. Two CHIRPS products are produced operationally: a rapid preliminary version, and a later final version. The preliminary CHIRPS uses only Global Telecommunications System (GTS) and Conagua (Mexico) data. The final CHIRPS product takes advantage of several other stations sources and is complete sometime in the third week of the following month.
